Accessing Your Exchange Account from Off Campus or UIUC Wireless
Due to security considerations, the network port that Outlook uses by default to access your Exchange mailbox is not accessible from off campus. There are several solutions that will allow you to access your email account from off-campus:
- Use Outlook Web Access (OWA)
- Use the CITES Virtual Private Networking (VPN)
- Configure Outlook to access Exchange over the Internet
II. Solutions
Use Outlook Web Access (OWA)
Using a web browser and the internet, Outlook Web Access (OWA) provides access to your Exchange account from anywhere in the
world at any time.
OWA allows access to email, scheduling (including group scheduling), contacts, and Exchange folders. You can drag-and-drop, use
pop-up menus, toolbars, out-of-office settings, and delegate access to your calendar. You can double-click to create appointments
and meetings, view meeting reminders in pop-up windows, search your mailbox, and view and edit distribution lists stored in your
contacts folder. OWA also features New Email alerts and meeting reminders.
Using Internet Explorer, OWA functions much like a standard version of Outlook. (Other browsers can be used, but may not be as functional.)
Use the CITES VPN Client and Outlook
- Using the VPN Client will allow you full access to UIUC resources when at home or when using UIUC Wireless, including
allowing your Microsoft Outlook client to behave exactly as it does on campus.
- The VPN configuration at UIUC is open to any UIUC student, staff, or faculty member who wishes to participate.

- Your department may run its own VPN service. If this is the case, please talk to your local network administrator for installation and configuration instructions.
Use RPC over HTTP in your Outlook Client
Configuring RPC over HTTP will allow your Outlook Client to function as if it were on campus without the installation of the VPN client.
Configuring RPC over HTTP requires Outlook 2003 or above running on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Vista.
Configure RPC over HTTP in your Outlook Client
- In Outlook 2007, on the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
- Select the Exchange account that you want to override the default settings for, and then click Change
.
- Click More Settings, and then click the Connection tab.
- Check Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP, and then click Exchange Proxy Settings
.

- Under Connection settings, type exchange.ad.uiuc.edu in the Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange box.
- Click to select both of the following check boxes:
- On a fast network, connect using HTTP first, and then by using TCP/IP.
- On a slow network, connect using HTTP first, and then by using TCP/IP.
- Under Proxy Authentication Settings, pick Basic Authentication.

- Click OK, click Apply, and then click OK.
- Click Next, and then click Finish.
